ESCUELA SAN LUCAS – Winter 1995-97
Site
Escuela San Lucas
Colonia San Lucas
Tejalpa, Morelos, Mexico
Description
The first of several international projects designed and built by the studio, this public school for the San Lucas community in Tajalpa was a three-year undertaking. An extended collaborative effort by three separate groups of students from the University of Washington, the project included the development of basic site and community infrastructure, a garden pavilion, and two elementary school buildings for over 300 students.
While dealing with a difficult physical site with no road access was a challenge, the studio was able to foster meaningful community participation as teachers, students, and promoters of long-term sustainable practices. Additionally, the program provided the visiting students with educational opportunities that immersed them in the sociocultural fabric of the local community.
